FLINTA* Caucus for Gender Equity

Formerly known as the Women’s Caucus of the GAAS, this network dates back to the first women’s workshop organized during the 1976 GAAS conference. In 2024, the caucus held elections to vote for its speakers for the first time, after a period in which the caucus was usually led by the female GAAS officers or members of the board.  At the 2025 meeting, the caucus resolved to change its name to FLINTA* Caucus for Gender Equity in order to better reflect the diversity among its members and its impetus to work towards greater gender equity beyond a binary understanding of gender-based discrimination, including matters of care work, choice of academic subject matter, or intersections with sexual, class, and ethnic identity.

The caucus organizes a (usually hybrid) meeting during the annual GAAS conference. This is an informal occasion to share updates on the success of its members, to promote the election of FLINTA individuals to GAAS positions, and exchange ideas for events and initiatives to support FLINTA individuals and groups in the GAAS, the field of American Studies, and academia. On specific initiatives, ideas, and issues, the caucus also organizes digital Town Halls to facilitate focused debates.
