Research Group:
Representations of Reproductive Justice in the United States: Past, Present, Future(s)
Organizers:
Ina Batzke (University of Augsburg)
Isabel Kalous (FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg)
With the formation of this research group, we aim to bring together scholars interested in examining how reproductive justice has been portrayed in literature and cultural texts pre- and post-Roe v. Wade. Drawing on Loretta Ross and Rickie Solinger’s framework of reproductive justice – which encompasses the right to have children, not have children, and to parent in safe and supportive environments – we aim to explore how reproductive rights and oppressions have been constructed, challenged, and reimagined in cultural narratives. From literary depictions of pregnancy, abortion, and (non)motherhood to broader cultural representations of reproductive technologies, parenting, and gender roles, we seek to examine the ways in which these texts engage with questions of race, class, sexuality, and nationhood in defining reproductive agency and justice. We plan to kick oU the project with an introductory Zoom meeting on February 28, 2025, at 10.00 AM (CEST). This initial meeting will serve as an opportunity to discuss the group’s goals and explore potential future meetings and events for those interested in exchanging ideas.
