PROFESSOR (TENURE) FOR AMERICAN STUDIES (SALARY SCALE W3)

The Faculty of Philology at Ruhr-Universität Bochum invites applications for the position of a Professor (tenure) for American Studies (Salary Scale W3) to start on 1 October 2021. The successful applicant should represent the field of American studies in its entire breadth and depth, both in research and teaching.

We especially invite candidates with an excellent and internationally visible research record as well as an interdisciplinary research profile who are committed to cooperating with researchers in the Faculty of Philology, the RuhrCenter of American Studies and other University Alliance Ruhr projects. The applicant is expected to actively contribute to the internationalisation of our teaching by cooperating with US-American colleagues and institutions, to the European University of Postindustrial Cities network (UNIC) as well as to our Doctoral Program in Transnational/Transatlantic Studies, the RUB Research School and the Research Academy Ruhr.

Requirements include:

  • willingness and proven ability to attract significant third-party funded research projects
  • readiness to participate in interdisciplinary academic work
  • willingness and ability to develop and cooperate larger research projects
  • a high level of commitment to teaching at all levels (B.A. to doctorate)
  • working knowledge of German or willingness to acquire it

Among the prerequisites for the post are a positive evaluation as a Junior Professor or an equivalent academic achievement (e.g. Habilitation, ‘second book’) or significant post-doctoral research contributions and teaching experience as well as a willingness to participate in the university’s self-administration. We also expect commitment to extracurricular outreach activities as well as the active mentoring of scholars in their post-doc and doctoral projects.
